HP Compaq Airlife 100 Android powered smartbookHP had shown off an Android powered smartbook at CES 2010. It had a 10 inch resistive touchscreen with 1 GHz snapdragon processor. Other specs were not unveiled and they are still unknown. Engadget just found that HP has submitted an Android powered netbook to FCC for approval and it is definitely the same ‘Compaq Airlife 100′.

We had been eagerly waiting for a powerful Android netbook or smartbook but nothing could satisfy us. It seems that our dreams are about to come true. Compaq Airlife 100 can be the answer to the Android netbook demands. It supports AT&T’s 3G bands so we can hope to be connected to the web all the time. What disappointed me is its form factor. Resistive touchscreens are in fact the ‘hit screens’ not the ‘touch screens’. It would be a bad bad experience to play with it when it has no support at the back. Resistive touchscreen usually need some force to be applied on them to respond. The hanging laptop-like touchscreen will keep on vibrating after each touch (or hit) action. I am not demanding a back support but the screen could be allowed to fold completely to the back of the keyboard. Or it could be allowed to be rotated and then folded like the HP touchsmart.

Unfortunately, we have not found any signs of official Google support to the device so we can expect lack of Google apps like the Android Market, maps etc. The demo unit at the CES also lacked the Android market.

Good points above on the resistive screen. Some devices come with a stylus for such screens. If HP keeps churning these types of devices out, they may eventually have a winner.
