Amazon’s Kindle DX was announced back in the beginning of May and is going to start shipping this week. Kindle DX features a 9.7 inch E Ink monochrome display thus 2.5x the display of the smaller Kindle. It also has a QWERTY keyboard at the bottom. It is a little thicker than Kindle 2 i.e 0.38 inches. The page controls at the left are no more present. Amazon kindle DX supports PDF and some other file formats and has a built-in geo sensor so that the screen is automatically flipped between landscape and portrait modes. Ebooks are delivered via the integrated 3G connection (which relies on Sprint’s EVDO Rev.A network).
PDF support is a nice addition, and the loading of files onto the Kindle DX either via the wireless Whispernet service (where you email the PDF – or indeed a variety of file formats, including HTML, DOC, RTF, JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP – to your DX’s unique email address, and it’s converted en-route) or via a USB connection to PC or Mac is simple and smooth. There’s 3.3GB of user-accessible space, more than twice what the Kindle 2 offers.
One thing which Kindle DX lacks is PDF zooming, so if the text size is too small, you will have to switch to the landscape mode and that’s the only solution.
The bigger Kindle has better features and promises better display, readability and variety of file formats for the readers. It is priced at $489.
